8 Pro-Tips for a Masculine-Inspired Decor

8 Pro-Tips for a Masculine-Inspired Decor

A “masculine style” for home decor is in no way related to the occupant’s gender (male, female or non-binary). It is instead a design aesthetic that can be customized to anyone’s tastes. We can all find something to love in rooms with a manlier appeal.

Do you think you might like it? Here is how decorating pros add a touch of masculinity to the different rooms of the house.

1- Mix Raw Materials

A concrete fireplace, a marble floor, a kitchen table with an imposing wooden base, and a matte black decorative vase are all examples of how you can introduce and combine raw materials to give a room a masculine look.

2 — Avoid Curves

Curves make for a softened ambiance, whether it be in rounded furnishings or decorative items. You can have circular lines in a bachelor-inspired room but use them sparingly. Most design elements should have straight lines and square angles.

3- Bet on Black

Black is the perfect gateway to designing a more virile room. This shade absorbs light, making a space darker in brightness and in mood. It is an easy matter to integrate the colour black into our decors. Simply paint an entire wall in it, for example. Or get a comfortable charcoal throw or furniture with ebony-coloured legs. Anything goes!

4- Add Leather (or Faux Leather)

Textures are important for this style of interior design. Soft, plush objects do not evoke that desired masculine spirit. Because of its cold, smooth texture, leather is the material to focus on, such as a mid-century modern brown leather sofa.

5- Choose Your Accent Colours Carefully

We can all agree that colours are in themselves gender neutral; however, when it comes to decor, some shades are more commonly associate to either masculine or feminine colour schemes. This is especially true when used as contrasting accents in a room with an overall darker palette. Yellow ochre, deep red and navy blue are good choices, but only in combination with a greater number of darker-hued elements. Otherwise, the space will be rather neutral in tone.

6- Use Metals

Gold, brass, copper, stainless steel and iron can add a punch of manliness to any room thanks to their impersonal and structural feel. And what great timing! Metal accents and accessories are one of the top projected trends for 2021!

7- Reduce the Number of Accessories

An eclectic or heavily accessorized room can still be masculine, but it’s much easier to achieve this look by decluttering and focusing on minimalist contemporary materials. For example, a bathroom designed around natural timber and stone will dazzle any eye even without shiny decorative items.

8- Go Industrial

For some reason, the industrial design aesthetic — think exposed beams, pipes and ducks — cannot help leaning toward the masculine. When visible, these elements that are usually hidden from view behind walls or ceilings create a space that is more casual and carefree. Moreover, this decor style often includes unrefined building materials such as concrete and brick.

The masculine look is a trend that is growing in popularity. Which room of your home do you plan on transforming?
