8 Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Mattress

8 Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Mattress

A mattress appropriate to your needs is essential for a good night’s sleep at home; however, it is often last thing people think about when setting up their bedroom.

We spend almost a third of our lives in bed, so we may as well make sure we have as healthy and comfortable an environment as possible. Still, a new mattress is expensive. Is it truly worth the cost? Definitely! It offers innumerable benefits: better sleep, reduced muscle and back pain, decreased allergies and asthma, etc. Are these not sufficient reasons to justify a little investment? Think of all the money you will save on massage and allergist appointments!

Here are 8 unmistakable signs that you need a new mattress.

1. It Has Reached the End of Its Useful Life

Unit recently, mattress industry experts recommended that a mattress should be changed every eight to ten years. This standard has now been reduced to between five and seven years. Is this just a strategy to sell more mattresses? Maybe. But there are other aspects you should consider when determining if your mattress has reached the end of its useful life aside from years of use:

•       Quality: Inferior quality spring and foam mattress don’t generally last that long. A hybrid model is a superior option, and the best mattress is one made of natural latex.

•       Maintenance: Just like with any other product, you will be able to keep a mattress longer if you take care of it. Rotate it every three months (or according to the manufacturer’s instructions) and protect it with a mattress cover.

•       Sleeper height and weight: A heavyset person or a couple will wear out their mattress faster than a lighter one.

•       Children and pets: Children in the household—by using the surface as a trampoline—can effectively shorten a mattress’s lifespan. Pets can scratch up the cover. And both can have “accidents” on the bed.

2. It Is Affecting Your Sleep

An additional sign that your mattress is no longer up to the job is how well you are sleeping. Do you wake up tired, but sleep apnea, insomnia or anxiety are not to blame? If this persists for several months, look to your mattress as this can be a clue that it’s time to replace it.

3. Areas Are Damaged or Sagging

A simple visual inspection is all you need to identify damage. A mattress that does not offer adequate support, that has collapsed in certain spots or that has broken springs pushing against the material should not be used. This is your sleep we are talking about, after all!

4. It’s Noisier Than Usual

Squeaking and creaking is the result of worn-out springs. If you and your partner wake each other up at night when one of you moves, it’s time to go shopping.

5. You Realize That You Sleep Better in Another Bed Than Your Own

There’s nothing like sleeping in one’s own bed—usually. If this is not the case for you, it may be your mattress’s fault. In fact, if you find that you feel more rested and refreshed after a night in a hotel room or at a friend’s house, you might want to consider getting a new mattress for yourself.

6. You Allergies or Asthma Is Getting Worse

Over time, the accumulation of dust and dust mites can lead to or increase the severity of allergies and asthma despite frequent and thorough washing. Don’t let your old mattress make you sick!

7. You Frequently Wake Up Sore All Over

Back and joint pain are sure signs that your mattress is not adapted to your body type and that it is not providing the right amount of support for optimal comfort.

8. You Don’t Enjoy Going to Bed Anymore

How do you feel when you slip in between the sheets every night? Snug and secure? Or do you constantly toss and turn, unable to fall asleep? If bedtime has become unpleasant, your mattress may not be the only reason, but it is still worth looking into.

A good mattress should not be seen as a luxury. It is in fact an indispensable home item. All the more so because this is a purchase you will have to live with for quite a few years. Think it over!
